Like many monasteries, Abingdon Abbey had a library: 40 of the original books have been identified, but there may still be more to be found. The books which have been identified date from the C12th to the C16th and one of the most beautiful to survive is the Abingdon Missal, which is in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Written and illustrated by the monks, what could be more appropriate for an exhibition on this year’s theme of “Creativity Unwrapped”? With kind permission from the Bodleian and Trinity College Library, Oxford we will display images from the Missal, together with information about its context and history. A modern-day calligrapher will be present demonstrating this lovely art form and there will be opportunities for children to colour in their own bit of illuminated manuscript.
The Exhibition will be in the Lower Hall, one of the remaining domestic buildings from the Abbey. The remainder of the buildings will be open to explore at your leisure. More information on the Open Properties page. (Link below)

Abingdon Heritage Weekend is an event managed by Friends of Abingdon Civic Society, working closely with the Abingdon and Area Archeological and Historical Society, and is run by a committee of volunteers. We aim to hold a heritage event every year in September, and the scale and scope of the event varies depending on the year and the budget. If you would like to become an organising volunteer please register your details here and we will contact you in late September/early October so that you can join in the planning for the next heritage event in 2024.
